Hey guys and girls,sorry this space hasn't been updated very often.Everyone's a bit tied up revising for exams!

You've all produced some fantastic work this term through the youth offender workshops we've been looking at.Everyone responded to it very maturely and I think we all got a lot from it.
Next we'll be doing pieces around the story of the Titanic,expect it to be emotional!

I hope everyone has a lovely break and rests up and good luck to anybody doing exams over the coming weeks.

Hey everyone sorry it's been a while,I'll hopefully be keeping this space more up to date with TYA happenings.

Firstly I would like to wish Mr Simon King a fantastic time in New Zealand. He'll be gone for a few weeks and I'm sure we'll all miss him.I know I will!
Fingers crossed he'll teach us the haka when he comes back ;)

Hey everyone it's Cal

First of all thank you to everyone who came to Nantwich on saturday from the Malpas TYA group. It was lovely to meet you all and to see what you get up to.

Romeo and Juliet 2011

It's me again, Jess, and this weekend I had the pleasure in returning to TYA to see the performance of Romeo and Juliet. This production, written and directed by the team and the students, was lit only with OHPs and the occasional torch. The students had obviously worked extremely hard to produce a fantastic and unique piece.

I will always be proud of you lot, and seeing most of this piece for the first time proved to me how talented and hardworking you all are!

The Blog, The Blog, The Blog...

Oh dear, my beautiful people how I have neglected this space of expressionism and reflection. Essentially, I've not done the blog for a while! I must apologise for this immensely and so much has been going on, I'm taking this break to tell the world what we've been doing.

Romeo and Juliet as you've never seen it before! That's what we're trying to do and tomorrow the script is being written and the scenes you have already created being slotted into it. Some of the physical theatre being used in the scenes is simply amazing, the likes of which we have not witnessed at TYA before and I am very proud! If the play is anything like the work that is being produced now, it will be incredible. However, the dead line has been set and dedicated readers you may know it here first. The play will go up in seven sessions time! I know, the excitement is incredible, as is the creeping scene of dread, though I have absolute faith in all of us!

On a slightly different note, I must apologise again, this time for the lack of media up here. Though photo's and video's have been taken, the cable has been lost, so you may have to wait for these just a little while longer. So, until next time, goodbye, and stay safe!

Exciting New Times!

So this week we tried some thing that neither Geoff or Me had ever tried! Well several things in fact! We stepped into a giant computer and travelled back and forward in time looking at different images to gain inspiration! Well, that was the idea! The work created was once again excellent, with a script being created in a matter of seconds by you guys! Good work!

This week was all about improvisation as we looked at exploring different themes in the play with improvisation. After a little encouragement we all got into it and had another great session and sowed the seeds for the next one. Enjoy guys!

This week starts with a video. We have to thank Callum for this as it is brilliant, I think you'll all agree. The week was yet another good one, if I do say so myself and we had some brilliant pieces of work created by all of you lot. The adverts were simply amazing and we were very impressed by them and I'm looking forward to continuing them next week! Unfortunately, due to the slightly forgetful mind I possess, there were no photo's taken! However, this brilliant video should do nicely until next week and keep your creative juices flowing!

Romeo and Juliet

So, after the mystery of what we were going to be doing this term finally solved with Romeo and Juliet being the answer, the first piece of real drama got under way. We created prologues and film trailers using the prologue in Romeo and Juliet as inspiration. The wide variety of work created was not the only stunning thing though, with the quality of work being fantastic.

Also, this week herald the start of a new direction for TYA as we were asked to do a radio play. With the writing of the script already taking place, it promises to be a brilliant term!

New Term

Well it's the week leading up to the new term and it's a new person writing the blog. I'm Simon and I popped up a few weeks before the end of the old term and I should be with you through to around Christmas time.

You all made me feel very welcome and I hope to see you all again on Saturday. The stuff we've got lined up is looking brilliant and I've very excited about it. Jess is still there in the back ground and while she isn't going to be there any more, we are calling each other constantly to ensure the change over is smooth!

Anyway, I hope that it's as exciting a time for you as it is for me and I look forward to working with you to create some great, original drama!

I just wanted to say a few words to thank all of you for your hard work over these last couple of years, I have had a fantastic time teaching you all and I am so proud! These past 5 years have been an incredible experience, and I have learnt so much as well as trying to share some of my knowledge with you, in the hope that you might have learnt something (I think you have!) I am going to miss all of you and even though I stress and shout every week, I don't know what I'm going to do without you. My Saturdays are going to be empty now! You have all changed so much over the time I've known you, and you're all grown up!

I'm going to stop before I cry again, but seriously, you are all fantastic performers, and never stop acting! I'll come and visit soon :)!

The end of an era...(part 2)

This week was the end of the term showcase and a celebration of 5 years of TYA. It was also a final farewell to two leaders, Sian and, well, me! It began with a quick workshop to finalise current pieces of work for the show, and a couple of run-throughs for the musical theatre group. The students then put together an opening on the show, creating tableaux based on the theme of 'memories'.

The final show was fantastic, opening with the film below, and with a selection of work from the past 5 years and some students even wrote pieces especially for the show in smaller groups. The pieces that they'd been working on this last term were excellent, showing a complete variety of characters and even though their starting points were similar, all of the groups had come up with something completely different. Some groups had put together films to enhance their pieces and these were shown along with their work. It was a great day, even if it did become emotional towards the end!

Thanks go to the students for all their hard work over the past term!

The Little Actors have been recently working on the story of two different islands, named Greenal and Greynal. As the story has developed, they have explored the ideas of teacher in role, improvisation, persuasive language and building upon a description to create something visual.

The Young Actors have been continuing their separate pieces, but also developing their skills as young performers. They have looked at a variety of texts and different ways of performing language, including short scenes from Lord of the Flies. Each student is able to perform some of their work to the the rest of the group every week.

Musical Theatre continues to grow as does the student's confidence. They are working on pieces for the showcase.

This week at TYA was all about controlling your body, and being able to keep focus. Students began with exercises that made them take on different characteristics and change their walk. They were then split into two groups which became rival fans at a football match, reacting to the game in slow motion, and then reacting to each other. They then joined together to make a human bomb which, with the aid of a smoke machine and atmospheric lighting, exploded in slow motion. They then all creating the beginning of a battle, and advanced in the same way.

The students then split into their groups and continued work on their plays, coming together at the end to share their work so far.

The musical theatre group continues to grow and work on all the pieces for the showcase. They are constantly producing high quality work and their confidence is increasing every week.

Nantwich Young Actors

This term at TYA has been full of creativity as the group has been working on their own plays from a variety of different texts. These will be performed at the end of this term as part of the summer performance which also celebrates five years of TYA.

The students worked on physical theatre through the poem 'The Jabberwocky', creating fantastical beasts and using the poem to inform their work. The group has also looked at the idea of stereotypes and how the characters they create can be used in their work.

The last week of term the students worked in a group to create a video on the theme of 'Health and Safety'. They showed maturity and a very high level of focus. They then used different emotions to make freeze-frames and improvise short scenes.

Little Actors

The Little Actors have continued to work on a variety of schemes this month. The first was creating a street in a town, with different buildings and shops, as each of the children became different characters, such as hotel managers and hairdressers. All of them had to react when a developer told them that their homes were going to be destroyed. They worked in groups to create television interviews on their reactions to this news and how they were going to save the street.

This term, the musical theatre group have continued to develop high quality pieces of work for their showcase, and the group has continued to grow. They worked on a brand new piece- Kid's Game from Blood Brothers, and also began a song from Chorus Line. Recently, they have added to One Short Day from Wicked and have created a short scene for part of the showcase.

Malpas Young Actors

THE LITTLE ACTORS

This term the little actors have focused on the story of an amazing zoo hidden deep in the forests of Japan. Using the imaginations of the group we ave travelled from a fine restaurant in Victorian London where two photographers set out, determined to capture the animals on film for the first time.

As the photographers cross the oceans to the Zoo, their plans are overheard by a Seagull who decides he must warn his friend the zoo keeper and flies off soaring high above the ocean and the countryside of Japan.

After an exhausting journey through forests, grasslands, mountains and snow the two Victorians finally arrive at the gates. The Zoo keeper decides to admit them but much to the bewilderment of the photographers, as the flash of the camera ignites, the animals in front of them disappear to be replaced magically by the very elements of Japan that they have travelled through.

The children each created their own animals, chose a special power that best represented their animal and chose what they should transform into as the photographs were taken, for example snowflakes, trees, mountains and grass. The group created ancient Japanese scrolls which they kept to remind them of their powers as they discussed and developed the story.

The Little Actors have now began work on the story of the Butterfly Hunter.

THE YOUNG ACTORS

The Young Actors have been unravelling the story of The Dancing Tiger. This story set in Ancient Japan is based around a 17th Century Japanese Emperor and his hunt for a most feared Assassin. It's a story that covers a lot of themes, not least Fear, Love, Loss, War, Revenge. Each week the proverb unveils a little more, and each session is aimed to allow the group to imagine, react, discuss and then recreate each part of the unfolding story.

The reactions and imaginations of the group make each week a story in it's own right as we journey through ancient Japan, and get a little closer to the true identity of the assassin known only to the people as The Dancing Tiger.

Mountain Language

The focus for this week in the young actors was developing physical theatre skills. Using influences from Harold Pinter's Mountain Language, the students looked the differences between city and countryside and created tableaux in small groups. They then added sound-scapes on top to create a full picture.

The group was then introduced to the idea through teacher in role that the city people had control over the countryside, and they were asked to write lists in their groups on how this could affect both societies.

The groups then created two different scenes reflecting the social differences between the two societies. This produced some powerful work, as the students really focused upon how this could influence the individual.

The Little Actors began this week's session with a short improvisation game and then began a workshop on a brand new story. This worked on their improvisation skills, teamwork but also their powers of persuasion. Key skills in drama such as understanding teacher in role and how to react to characters were also worked on in the session.

The art group Splat runs from 10-11 and students are able to express their creative skills in a range of activities.

This week the key theme for the workshop was working with text and creating scenes from a few simple lines. One of the main lessons from the day for the students was how people's work can differ even when they have the same starting point. There were some fantastic scenes produced, and the students also worked on how to express themselves in a naturalistic way and keeping the scenes real.

Musical theatre are putting together pieces for a performance in the summer, and this group is always looking for new members, running 12.40-1.40.

The Little Actors began this week by designing and decorating their very own Easter eggs. They then worked together in teams using body as prop to create shapes and objects.

After the warm up they finished the story of the wizard and the keys. Following the story around the space with props to help the imagination and also teacher in role, they then had to use some simple materials to make a time machine to get them home! They have really enjoyed following this story and being able to work together to solve the mystery. It has also allowed to them to develop their skills working in groups.

The older group began this week with pair work improvising different scenes in a restaurant, as well as adding some accents, which led to some entertaining moments!

The story of The Seal Wife then continued, where half of the group became the children and the other half the parents. With teacher in role, the children were told to ask their parents about stories of the sea, which became short improvised moments between the pairs. The children the went back to the school and told these stories back to the rest of the group, but exaggerated the details to show how myths and legends develop.

The students then went back into groups and were given a selection of materials and props, such as masks and lights, to create a dream of either the fisherman or the seal wife. They then performed these with lighting, music and projections of images, which was some fantastic work.

The Musical Theatre group decided which direction their performance would go in, and continued work on the song 'One Short Day' from Wicked.

The Story of the Seal Wife

The Little Actors this week began with a story about a wizard in a magical kingdom, which the children listened to and then created short scenes around as the story progressed.

The Older Actors started workshops on the legend 'The Seal Wife'. After creating the backdrop with body as prop over a narration of the story, the students worked in groups and focused on aspects of one character's life. They created four different tableaux representing ages of his life. By using material and projections, they created a dramatic space to perform in.

The Final Chapter...

This week, Little Actors was based on the theme of a circus. The students played animal games and were then introduced to the ringmaster, who had a serious message for them. This allowed them to begin to understand teacher in role, a perfect way to lead them into a piece of work. They then worked in groups to create different scenes that would be seen in a circus. At the end of the session, they performed these scenes. Performing at the end of every week allows them to build confidence, and understand the way of working on stage.

The workshops on Fame for the older group came to an end this week. They began in pairs showing a scene of betrayal, where they had to make choices on the development of the scene and how the story would end.

For the last scene based on 'Fame' the students brought together all they had done in the past few weeks by working in groups to create a television interview between a journalist and the celebrity looking back at turning points in their life.

The musical theatre group then worked on a dance routine for Hairspray's You Can't Stop The Beat.

Crisis In Paradise

This week during the Older Actors session the theme of Fame was continued, but this week was based around a crisis that the celebrity had suffered, and the consequences of this.

The warm-up for this week included the group understanding the voice better, and the how changing volume between characters has an impact on an improvised scene.

After this, the group worked in pairs, working on a short scene of the celebrity first talking about the crisis to their agent. This allowed for some really emotive and powerful scenes, with students being able to develop their character with strong emotions.

Given the word 'home' the students came up with short sentences or words around this theme. This allowed them to begin to picture a home environment in an effect way without the need of props or pictures.

The students then watched a short scene performed by the leaders, and produced their own improvisation from this, and a selection where shown in front of the whole group.

The group's focus in role and performance was fantastic this week, and their characters are really developing.

Next week, the students will face some important decisions in character!

The Price of Fame?

Both groups at Nantwich began new themes this week. Nantwich Little Actors became the owners of a range of buildings on a high street including a hotel and café and put together short scenes showing the shops being inspected and their reactions to this. Staying in role for a long period of time is a challenge for the Little Actors, but they all do it fantastically! Their quick thinking allows for excellent scenes and some comedy moments when they out-think the adults! Through this work they develop performance skills that are crucial for any show.

After the success of the pantomime last week, the older actors began work on 'Fame'. The first workshop allowed them to develop a character and where the character's skills came from that allowed them to become famous.

To begin, all of the students took part in a chat-show in character, where they were all asked questions such as 'what, for you is the down-side of fame?' and had to quickly develop their characters by thinking about their influences and where they came from.

The students then worked in smaller groups to create tableaux of their characters as children, and where there was the first suggestion of them becoming famous. This produced some incredibly powerful images.

TYA Present 'Sleeping Beauty'

Saturday was another early start with some students coming in to completely finish the set, which, in the end, looked fantastic! The best set we have ever had! At half ten, all of the students arrived to get into costume and make-up ready for a quick rehearsal. There was a really great surprise for myself and the other leaders when the backdrop for the second act was revealed, which had been done by some students and parents! A massive thank-you from everyone, it would have been no where near as good without you!

The morning was a rehearsal which included the dancers as well as Holly and Charis' song for the first time, which were both fabulous additions to the show.

After this, we let the audience in for the first time and the curtain went up with no empty seats. Both performances were brilliant, and the audience loved it as well, which was shown by their enthusiasm to get involved in the pantomime atmosphere. We also welcomed some of the Malpas group, who came to watch as they have also performed the pantomime.

The students have worked incredibly hard over the past few weeks, and the final shows were proof of this. We are really proud of all the students for the energy, time and effort put in to the show.

TYA All Day Dress Rehearsal

The day started early for some students with a small group painting the backdrop for the show, which was finished just in time for the first run through and looked absolutely fantastic!

After putting the scenery in place, the students ran through the second act and put together individual scenes for the first time. It was then time for the first full run through, which couldn't have gone any better-it looked brilliant! Only a few minor tweaks were needed, and it was really impressive how well the students knew the show and how much energy everyone gave.

Following a break for lunch, the students performed the show in front of the very first audience member! This was the final run through for the day and looked amazing!

With an hour to spare, the whole group played some games as well as releasing some energy by having fun with the parachute!!

Next week promises to be great, and in fact both shows sold out within one week!

A special thank-you to the members of the group who painted the scenery during lunch times at Malbank School, we are really grateful, and wouldn't have been able to do it without you!

Reliving old memories

There have been some amazing shows over the years at TYA and with the pantomime coming up, here are a selection of some of the productions the company has done over the years...

The Dark Tales of the Night

TYA's first performance was in 2006: The Dark Tales of The Night based on ‘The Grim Tales’. Small groups each performed a different tale and gave their own interpretation of the stories. The success of this performance gave everyone confidence and the desire to stage more productions. The Nantwich Young Actors raised money from this performance for the Shelter Box Appeal.

Cinderella was the second production by TYA and was performed in 2007 at Malbank High School. The pantomime itself was split into different sections to enable everyone to work within smaller groups to develop the performance and to ensure that every student had the opportunity to show their skills and the improvement made over their time with TYA. Some sections of the play were written by the students themselves and all costumes were designed and chosen by them as well.

Under the Influence

This performance really allowed the students to understand the development of a production and the process of putting one together, beginning with auditions and ending with a fantastic show! Wacky Soap explored some serious issues whilst including songs and monologues as well as plenty of comedy moments.

TYA have put on other shows, some without script, one developed purely from the stimulus of a simple myth.

'Sleeping Beauty' will be performed on 6th February at Malbank School, with one performance at 12, and a second at 2.30. Tickets are £3.50, email actconfident_actnatural@hotmail.com for more information. TYA dance group will also be performing.

Musical Theatre

I really enjoyed the musical theatre session today with Rob and Joel. It was really great to do some musical based work and just have fun!

In the session, we worked on a scene from Billy Elliot the Musical, where we learnt a routine from the show :) we then put the routine to the actual music from the show which was amazing! Also, we did some warm-up activities, one of which was called hands and arms. This was a really great activity and was very funny!

I will definitely be going again to musical theatre and recommend it to everyone! It was fantastic and I definitely would like to do more musical theatre in the future :)

Two weeks to go...

This week Nantwich Young Actors have been continuing rehearsals for the pantomime which is only 2 weeks away! It's looking really good, and this week the group started painting the scenery too, ready for the dress rehearsal next week.

The Little Actors are working on a journey through space and are continuing to develop their skills as young performers, as well as gaining invaluable confidence and having a really great time!

After Young Actors, Rob West ran a musical theatre session with students, which has had fantastic feedback already!

Next week is an all day rehearsal for students where they will end the day with a dress rehearsal for the pantomime.

The first of many...

Welcome to this brand new blog from TYA! You'll be able to see updates for The Young Actors and keep up to date with workshops and shows. Pictures and videos will also be uploaded from the sessions. There will also be extra blog entries from the students themselves.

Over the past couple of months, the older group at Nantwich Young Actors have been working on the pantomime 'Sleeping Beauty' and we're now only a few weeks away from the show. Before Christmas, the students put together a fantastic opening and worked in smaller groups to put together individual scenes, and the panto was really taking shape. In the next rehearsals, as well as finalising the show, the students will design and make the set and costumes.

The Little Actors at Nantwich have been doing a variety of workshops, and the week before Christmas enjoyed a special workshop by Jon from Malpas Young Actors.
